I like quite a few mecha anime because a good execution matters way more than the synopsis, but I'm not a fan of the genre. I think it's something too specific, considering that sci-fi already exists (just like isekai instead of standard fantasy). It's as if there were hundreds of anime about death notes, titans, alchemy or karuta, and those became their own genre. If Gundam were the only mecha, you wouldn't think of mecha as a genre; you'll just call it a sci-fi anime.

Do I hate it no. I just don't really have an appeal in it. If they are used in battles for action scenes or transport like cars are then sure. I don't mind. Even cars/bikes I don't mind I haven't watched anime with them but I buy games with them because I like the difference then playing a character all the time I like the feel of it/structure of them.
I haven't seen many mecha either. Like I have heard about some themes and sure they suit for the politics, or the battles or the average person gets in and fights and so on but eh. I don't care to go and see any.
Same with magical girl or super sentai/power rangers shows I probably haven't seen any but did I like Ore, Twintail ni Narimasu yes I did but I think it's more a parody show/spin on things power rangers show I guess.
I've seen magical girl like references/scenes in other shows but would I care to watch one properly no. They have a place for sure but I just don't have interest in them.
I've even only dipped into Yuri/Gender Bender even in some shows or manga even only a few times.
I know more/however much I can from other shows referencing them then seeing a single proper magical girl show, power rangers or mecha show.
Like did I watch Transformers or Pacific Rift yes did I for the mech aspects no. So I wouldn't really for Mecha either. There 'fine' but not something I'm compelled to go see.
Like I don't count Infinite Stratos as really being a mecha obviously it's a trash ecchi harem with exosuits/some mecha sort of but not really in the typical giant robots or however strike witches or others are I guess.
If mechs are there sure otherwise I don't care for the appeal of mechs/story/themes/action in them at all really. They exist they have a place but am I going out of my way to see them no.

I think a misconception that people have about mecha is that in every case the cool giant robots are the show. When really, they are used as tools to move the story forward. In cases where the mechs pretty much are the show, that anime is probably a super robot mecha.
At the end of the day though, you still gotta like cool robots to enjoy mecha.

I've got nothing against mecha really, but I also really don't have anything that enamors me about it either. Having said this, there are some very good mecha anime out there, usually either the surreal reality-warping symbolic stuff or some of the super in-depth military logistical and psychological dramas.
The only thing I really held against the genre no longer applies which is way back in the day it was a bit like what isekai is now, which is to say it was the ubiquitous cash cow that was copied to death and pretty much eclipsed all the entire anime sci-fi genre at the time.

I was just arguing with someone about this the other day, I genuinely hate the mecha genre. It's so incredibly boring, Sure old mecha drawn in the 2d has some merit as being interesting pieces of art but this modern CGI mecha stuff really puts me off any shows they are in. Mecha is just an excuse to get a lame boring character the ability to do things, I would rather watch a person with cool powers fly around and shoot beams than a robot doing it. Not my thing.

Honestly that's a great question. Many shows that I quite like feature mecha as a genre (Code Geass & TTGL, off the top of my head) but I guess I do tend to avoid it most of the time.
To be fair I don't hate it, but if it's the main aspect of a show it bores me quite quick. If it's a secondary genre I don't mind it that much.

Yeah, calling BS on this. Mecha has always been about character development just like any other dramatic genre. It's been like that since Mazinger Z in 1972, and definitely since Gundam 0079 in 1979.

I had this problem too back when I was like 13-14, but then I heard of GaoGaiGar (check out the Yuusha series if you're a fan of sentient mecha) and it really helped to ease me in into the concept of piloted mecha. Has a team of Transformers-like sentient mecha and a main piloted mecha.

On the contrary, I'd say the genre is highly underrated. Sure, it has some derivation (after all there's only so many ways you can design a pilotable machine) but I'd say other anime genres are just as derivative of one another, and that's more of a problem with the industry as a whole.
Regarding the fandom, I'd say it's actually one of the better ones once you start getting into stuff that isn't Gundam, Evangelion or whatever seasonal mecha show. Met a ton of great guys thanks to mecha.

Mecha is a secondary genre. It goes well with radically different settings, character styles, aesthetics. You can toss in battle stuff, space operas, fantasy, isekai, even moe stuff. It's a thing of perception.

Yeah, some Mecha shows can be boring if the anime itself isn't good
Like i can see why someone would not watch shows like UFO robot grendizer
the hi focus on fights and monster of the week type narrative is something that can turn many people off
myself included if the show doesn't have anything new or original
I highly recommend NGE and the original gundam i think you would like them

I think if more people would look at the genre like this, most of them would love it
Like SNK is a show that is so beloved by everyone and it's basically a Mecha show.

Yes 2d old Mecha where the best.
The thing about 2d modern Mecha is that sometimes they are not well portrayed by the anime itself and look kinda bland.
3d can be good if it's stylized well.

For example more like "kill la kill" that doesn't take itself so serious.

I don’t hate them, I just find them unrealistic, generally if big machines are needed in order to fight/complete tasks there are tons of different designs that would work a lot better in real life, without the need of having someone inside piloting them let alone a hole team. My tolerance for bullshit like that is very low.

Mecha got me into Anime to begin with, believe it or not.
my first, formative years growing up in the 80's, i was encouraged to develop a fascination for NASA and U.S. NAVY/USAF Aerospace Engineering,
and that never left me, even through my dumbest teen years in the 90's.
so, when i stumbled upon Anime in the mid-90's, -by way of S.D.F. MACROSS' VF-1 "Valkyrie" Mecha- it was practically taylor-made, love-at-first-sight;

In 2075, space travel is no longer just a dream, but an everyday reality for mankind. Advancements in science and technology have led to the colonization of the moon, the commercialization of outer space, and the formation of large space corporations. Ai Tanabe, an upbeat woman whose interests lie in the cosmos, joins Technora Corporation as a member of their Debris Section, a department dedicated to the removal of dangerous space junk between the orbits of the Earth and Moon.
However, Ai soon discovers how unappreciated her job is. As the laughingstock of Technora, the Debris Section is severely understaffed, poorly funded, and is forced to use a dilapidated spaceship nicknamed the "Toy Box" for debris retrieval. Undeterred, Ai perseveres and gradually becomes acquainted with the strange personalities that make up the Debris Section's staff, such as the bumbling but good-natured chief clerk Philippe Myers; the mysterious and tight-lipped temp worker Edelgard Rivera; and the hotheaded and passionate Hachirouta Hoshino, who longs for a spaceship to call his own.

Don't have much mecha in my list, but 3 of my 5 favorites has it (Eva, Code Geass?, Gundam IBO) and Break Blade is high on my list.
Not many things I immediately dislike:
- Transformation in vehicles: not so common nowadays as I have only seem this in the Gundam movies summarizing the early shows, but I found it atrocious. I like Transformers, I grew up with the CGI Beast Wars show, but when you're trying to have a more realistic world it feels cartoonish.
- Space wars: What's the point of having heavy, hard to control robots if you're putting them in a weightless environment with jets to glide them around effortlessly? I loses all the impact that each step has, the limitations of the mechanics in the maneuverability, the landscape being used for cover. Gundam IBO gets it right IMO because Barbatos goes melee in space and there's lots of asteroids being hit during the fights all this help to convey the energy of the moves.
I like sci-fi, military/authoritarian aesthetics and political themes and mehca can easily put it all together.

That's right, it doesn't exist.
Gurren Lagann, if you need a more modern example. Outright better waifu(s) that isn't a discount Lum from Urusei Yatsura, a story that's a throwback to classic 70s super robot shows with all the modern aesthetics, pretty solid soundtrack all around...

People who say they don't like mecha either:
This may blow some people's minds but literally most mecha is, in fact, about the characters. Don't let gunplaheads who skipped 0079 and weird Eva fan anitubers fool you bro
- haven't watched a single mecha anime, have only seen parodies, and think it's 100% constant robot fights
- have only seen the shlockiest of super robot stuff and think it's the entire genre (I like kids' super robot anime, but it is an acquired taste)
- actually like mecha (Code Geass, 86, Evangelion, and Gurren Lagann are all pretty standard for their subgenres) and are just insecure because some Crunchyroll-plant anituber said the genre sucked

Zero Two is easily a better waifu than any of those characters. MadanielFL said:

Typical. Keep coping. Maybe Twitter is the place you should go to instead.

Objectively wrong, Cross Ange is the best mecha anime. Darling in the Franxx is still the best mecha anime ever made, followed by 86
